Gallup

Today we travelled through Apache country
to a town called Gallup.

(A bit of useless information for you. It was once claimed
that Bob Dylan was raised in Gallup. Even though he is
the nephew of a local businessman whose store bore
the original name of Zimmerman the claim was false.
Dylan spent several months in Gallup but he was
actually born and raised in Minnesota.)

*(P.S. 15.02.09 - I've just watched a documentary about
Dylan. On it he actually stated that he was raised in Gallup.
Now this is really useless & confusing information!)

Bob Dylan MAY have actually stood right here!

It felt very strange seeing the scenery of
cowboy movies with the reality of modern
life etched on it.

The towns that edged the freeway were
rundown and very poor looking. Many
places were derelict, looking like people
had just walked away. Trailer homes and
caravans were deserted along with piles
of junk and old cars.

Many mines were closed in the 1970s and
1980s and this has impacted on the overall
lack of economic growth. The most common
roadside sign was for land for sale although I
did see a sign offering Wolf/Malamute pups
for sale.

Takes my pet hate of ‘designer dogs’
to a whole new level!

The scenery went on and on for miles.
Although the background was very beautiful,
the reality I found rather humbling. We
really don’t know how well off we are.
